Three CLT homes sit naturally next to each other in the maritime landscape, yet offer each home private shelter and sea views.
Tammisalo's three diamonds – CLT homes in maritime landscapes
A complex of three detached houses was built in Tammisalo, Helsinki, where real wood can be seen in its true beauty. The courtyard blends seamlessly into the surrounding nature, and the fan-shaped layout of the houses guarantees each resident stunning sea views without compromising privacy. The architect couple Aleksi Niemeläinen and Anni Ojanen are behind the entire project.
The story behind the plot
Aleksi, who hails from Tammisalo, found the plot of land of his dreams while cycling. The desired building site had not been sold, and although the plot was challenging in terms of its shape and size, Aleksi immediately saw the potential of the plot. He outlined a whole for the plot that took into account the environment and living there.
Wood can also be seen and felt inside homes
When you step inside, you can sense the familiar material from the facade right from the entrance hall. The atmosphere of the home is harmonious and peaceful. Real wood has been used as the surface material wherever possible and the overall look has been successful. Authenticity has also been emphasized in the choice of furniture materials. In addition to its beautiful appearance, the family has found wood to be a practical material. It is easy to attach pictures and the material does not suffer in a family with children, but can withstand bumps and knocks. To ensure that the material continues seamlessly throughout the house, the builders chose Puustamo interior doors, which are also made of CLT. The interior doors were ordered untreated so that they could be given the same color treatment as the walls.
Community and cost-effectiveness
The two other families involved in the construction project were already familiar to Anni and Aleks, and the cooperation between the builders went smoothly. The architect couple presented the proposals and the co-builders were usually involved immediately, although some individual solutions took longer to work on. The three-home construction project saved costs as procurement and work phases could be duplicated. The three-story houses, measuring approximately 155 square meters, offer flexibility to meet the needs of the residents. Each home has the same basic floor plan, but the floor plan made it possible for the homes to have the right number of rooms for each family. If needs change, the room layouts can also be changed in the future.

Colorful exterior doors add interest to the facade
The eye-catchers of the facade are the main doors manufactured by Puustam, which are of different colors. The use of colors in the doors was in the plans from the beginning and the main colors were a clear choice. Aleksi is familiar with the use of colors in exterior doors from his childhood home, where he also found doors of different colors. Puustam's doors have proven to be of high quality in use and are also pleasing to the eye.
Futudesign – a design agency that takes the circular economy into account
Aleksi and Anni both work at the architectural firm Futudesign. The company designs renovations and changes of use of valuable properties in Helsinki and elsewhere in Finland. Futudesign's footprint can be seen in numerous office and commercial buildings as well as innovative transformation projects for hotels and restaurants that utilize the circular economy.
